William Hague launched the Conservative Party manifesto outside Bolton Town Hall yesterday. He appeared in front of Conservative Party activists from across Bolton inviting the British public to join the Government. Balloons and placards battled the wind as William gave people a clear-cut choice between five more years of Labour failure and positive Conservative change. As I stood in the crowd (surrounded by star-struck members of Conservative Future) I couldn’t help notice how new groups of people had formed around Hague. These weren’t of eager young Conservatives, but of groups from the public waiting to engage with William on what a Conservative change would mean for them.
This election, described to be “the most important election of a generation”, now had a comprehensive blueprint to rebuild our broken economy, mend our broken society and to fix our broken politics.
We left the rally and spoke to people out and about in Bolton yesterday. We found many who had voted Labour all their lives and felt betrayed by Brown’s performance both as Prime Minister and on the economy – all vowing never to vote Labour again. William, speaking again at a local café, reminded people that a Conservative government represented the best hope for change here in the North West.
